The Soft Touches Of Signature Details:“NYC Downtown Girl”

By Lamees Lodhi

The best way to elevate your style is to develop a signature look--it enhances your

bold parts and turns yourself into your very own fashion icon. Fashion serves as a

canvas for self-expression. Holding no boundaries, it allows you to display what you

love about yourself and what means the most to you. Especially when living in the

beaming heart of the city, surrounded by other defining styles, it can be difficult to

know what you are looking for. After digging through my Pinterest boards and

taking note of New Yorkers’ dressing styles, I hereby present to you a guide to find

your signature piece as a NYC “Downtown Girl.”

Ribbons, a touch of elegance that compliments any outfit you wear. Specifically,

material like lace can be such an attraction. Whether you decide to tie one on your

bag, belt loop, or hair, ribbons can impart a blend of color and delicateness. If you are

looking for inspiration, the fashion designer Sandy Liang is well known for an artful

incorporation of bows into her fashion pieces.

If you are looking to draw eyes in, red is the shade for you. It speaks volumes for its

intensity and power. As the weather gets colder in New York, where rain is a

constant companion, you should definitely consider adding a touch of red to your

everyday outfits . One of my favorite ways is through lipstick–a simple bare face with

the shade “Black Cherry” by Revlon, a deeper plum red. Red nail polish, along with

items like a red purse or a red leather jacket, can further amplify your fashion

statement.

And of course, let us not forget about shoes! Wedge shoes, a personal favorite, have

recently become a hit. You can add the perfect flare by pairing them with a skirt, a

white button up shirt, or baggy jeans. Alternatively, cowboy boots and a white skirt

compose a timeless look. For a polished stride to your class, opt for pointed toe heels

and flare jeans. Finally, red flats harmonize beautifully with ribbons and a black

leather jacket.

When it comes to sustainability, many of these “downtown” fashion items can be

found in thrift stores. Personally, I have sourced many of my ribbons from presents

and leftover shopping packages. If you want to craft your own cool piece of fashion

while also being sustainable, crocheting would be a perfect choice. I have crocheted

items like scarves, which are ideal for the city’s rainy and colder seasons.

Since my arrival in the city, I have been exploring the interplay of colors and

accessories that suits me the most, as well and learning more about what I value in

fashion. It is important to not force yourself into someone else’s style, but practice

independence through what appeals most to you. With that, I am ready to present

myself through the soft touches of my signature looks as a NYC girl.
